Global Citizen Festival

I always get excited about finding cool and inspiring initiatives. Global Citizen is one such campaign that I am participating in. It is essentially a community of people around the world who care about issues that affect our world, and want to take action and make a difference. These issues range from health, food and water, water and sanitation to citizenship and everything in between. The team at Global Citizen partner with various organizations including the United Nations. On 25 September world leaders at the UN General Assembly will sign and announce the new Sustainable Development Goals.

The Global Citizen Festival taking place on the 26th of September 2015 in New York City, is well-timed to coincide with this historic event. The festival initially caught my attention due to its unconventional nature. I don’t know about you but sometimes the cost and logistics of festivals and concerts is a hindrance to my attendance. I took a look at the stellar line-up headlined by BeyoncĂ©, Coldplay Ed Sheeran, Pearl Jam and automatically thought the price would be ridiculously high. But it wasn’t. Infact the festival is free for all regular attendees!

Here is the unconventional part; it is a free ticketed event. Tickets to the festival were available to anyone who was willing to take action to end extreme poverty. There were a series of actions to take in order to earn points which would enter you into the draw for free tickets. The action journey ensured you were a part of the movement and included small steps like sending out a tweet about any of the goals to emailing and phoning congress men/women about an issue you feel needs policy change. Everyone was able to join in this community. and elevate our individual voices. I earned enough points to enter the draw after a week of action steps and on the 10th of September I got the email that I had won two tickets to the festival!

Since July 2015, a total of 48,000 free tickets to the 2015 Global Citizen Festival have been given away. It is going to be a massive festival, supported by various organizations and celebrities. I am more excited that it will be a tribute to the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals. Unlike the Millenium Development Goals that came into effect when I was too young to understand and were decided on in a secret backroom (as the legend goes), I feel more connected to the new goals. To be a part of the launch and to be in New York City were the United Nations Headquarters is, also makes it even more special. i imagine it will be along the lines of the Live 8 concert in 2008, bringing together people from all walks of life in support of a global cause.

While the official action journey phase to win tickets has ended, there are still many ways to win tickets to the Festival! Their website suggests keeping an eye on the Global Citizen social media channels over the next week. Information about new opportunities to win tickets will be posted there. So if you are near or in New York City, keep a lookout. The event will also be live streamed so everybody can join in the action.
